William Sidney Mullins (1824-1878) of Fayetteville, NC, entered the University in 1839 and graduated with second honors in 1842. He received an MA in 1845 and after moving to Marion, SC, married Sarah Ann Hodges (1829-1874). A lawyer and planter, Mullins served in the SC General Assembly and became president of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad. He served as adjutant with the Eighth Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers and was present at the first Battle of Manasas (Bull Run); his letter describing the terrible conflict is housed in the Manuscripts Division, South Caroliniana Library, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. A journal describing his junior year in college (1840-1841) is housed as the William Sidney Mullins Diary #531-z, Southern Historical Collection, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
